Blizzard

blizzard

The National Weather Service defines a blizzard as a severe snow storm characterized by strong winds causing blowing snow that result in low visibility. The difference between a blizzard and a snowstorm is the strength of the wind, not the amount of snow.

To be a blizzard, a snow storm must have sustained winds or frequent gusts that are greater than or equal 35 mph with blowing or drifting snow which reduces visibility to 0.25 mi or less and must last for three hours or more.

Stay inside!  DO NOT DRIVE IN A BLIZZARD!

With zero visibility you will most likely become part of the problem creating a blockage in the roadway which keeps the Highway crews from doing their jobs.

“During the Blizzard of 1978, school was out, there was a snow emergency so we couldn’t go anywhere,” writes Lance Grubbs. “We stayed home and ate vegetable soup and chili for days. But we did get outside to shovel some snow and ended up making a snow tiger in the back yard at 733 E. Center St. We used food coloring and spray paint for the colors. It was a group effort!”
